Day 1 Access program giving access to textbooks at Illinois

The Day 1 Access program saved students a record $3.3 million on textbooks.

The University of Illinois’ commitment to removing financial and logistical barriers to academic success has reached a significant milestone. Since its start, the Day 1 Access program has saved Illinois students more than $3.3 million compared to the cost of traditional textbooks. This integration saved $1.2 million in the fall 2025 semester alone. These numbers reflect the U of I’s growing effort to make course materials affordable and accessible to everyone, including seamless integration into the learning experience.

Incorporating RedShelf (a digital course materials provider) into Canvas @ Illinois was a major contributor to this improved outcome. Led by the staff at Technology Services, this integration now allows instructors participating in Day 1 Access to automatically deliver digital content to students directly through their Canvas course.

Simply put, RedShelf is a platform which provides digital versions of textbooks and other course materials. Instead of relying on costly and wasteful printed materials or navigating through multiple external sources, students can gain immediate access to the materials that they need through an easy-to-use interface. RedShelf’s platform also supports features such as searchable text, highlighting tools and multi-device access, all tools which enhance both accessibility and ease of use for busy college students.

The impact of this service extends beyond convenience. By reducing the cost of course materials and ensuring universal access from the start, the Day 1 Access program directly supports student equity and academic performance. Faculty and staff benefit as well, with a simplified means of distributing necessary course materials.

These continued savings and smoother pathways for teaching and learning highlight Illinois’ commitment to innovation. As participation in the program continues to expand, so will U of I’s ability to provide high quality and affordable academic resources for students—starting from Day 1.
