Level up your cyber game (and more) this October

Technology Services wants you to take part in Cybersecurity Awareness Month online events that begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1 with a live game show. Participants will compete for bragging rights against others from around the Big Ten.

“We take cybersecurity very seriously, but learning does not have to be stodgy or dry. This month we’re reinforcing cybersecurity best practices in lots of creative ways,” said senior training specialist Sandy Delaney.

We partnered with the Big Ten Academic Alliance for some events, and there is something different each week of October, she noted.

Other activities include a game of Passwordle, a contest to name a new cybersecurity training mascot, panelists sharing real-life dangers of the digital world and more.

Visit the event page at cybersecurity.illinois.edu to sign up and get more participation information.

In this together

Cybersecurity at Illinois is a partnership between the professionals who track and work to prevent data from being compromised and you. Individuals are the first line of defense against attempts at phishing, social engineering or other tactics. That’s why it is very important to understand how to stay safer and put that into practice.

When in doubt, report

It is always appropriate to let someone take a closer look at something you think just looks or feels off. Illinois students, faculty and staff can report suspicious email by using the report spam button built into the university email platform. And always report incidents or other urgent cybersecurity events such as ransomware or a data breach by sending an email to security@illinois.edu or calling 217-265-0000. For information about when and how to report a cybersecurity incident, see cybersecurity.illinois.edu/report-a-cybersecurity-incident.
